Britney Spears, the controversial legal guardian since 2008, will speak Wednesday (June 23) in Los Angeles courts about the fight over her father’s control of her affairs.
Since going publicly bankrupt more than a decade ago, the 39-year-old star’s finances and personal life have been managed by her father, Jamie Spears. As guardians that lasted more than a decade, fans came together to launch the “FreeBritney” online campaign.
The singer, who refused to return to the stage in 2019, has made little public comment on her private life. Fans also believe that her social media accounts were handled by her father, leading to high expectations that Britney will speak in person in court.

Reportedly, Spears got the chance to speak to the judge remotely on Wednesday (June 23) via an internet link. In April 2021, Spears’ attorney Ingham said the singer would like to hear directly from Judge Brenda Penny. “I want Britney to call the court directly,” she said, without giving reasons.
In February 2021, a judge denied Jamie Spears’ sole authority to delegate her investments, ruling that Spears’ father and the Bessemer Trust would oversee the pop star’s finances.
Specifically, Spears asked financial institutions to remove her father from custody in 2020 and give the financial institution sole authority over her property. Her lawyer Samuel Ingham said Spears was “too scared” of her father. Spears also said her guardianship prevented her from making her own decisions about friendships, dating, spending, and even the color of kitchen cabinets.

Confidential records published by the New York Times in 2016 told court investigators that Spears’ guardianship “has become an oppressive and controlling instrument against her.” Spears told investigators that she wanted her to be removed from guardianship as soon as possible, and she said she was “tired of being taken advantage of.”
Reportedly, Spears is expected to talk about guardianship qualifications and his father’s commanding role. Reportedly, the singer is currently paying legal bills from both sides, including huge fees charged by lawyers who oppose her in the current case.
